A deep-rooted fascination with the diversity and expressive power in music has fuelled Sára Bolyki on her journey of exploring different genres and styles. After a decade of studying classical piano, she got her jazz singer qualifications at the Béla Bartók Conservatory, studied Georgian vocalpolyphony at Tbilisi State Conservatoire, and earned her master’s degree in Hungarian folk music at the Liszt Academy in Budapest. Being one of the most versatile singers of her generation, she sang Peruvian Baroque repertoire with Bacchus Consort, Steve Reich pieces with Amadinda Percussion Project and Circlesongs in Bobby McFerrin’s Budapest concert. She is the mezzosoprano of multi-award-winning jazz acappella quintet Jazzation, sings Hungarian and Balkan folk-inspired settings of poetry in all-star world music group Babcsán Projekt, utilizes her arrangement skills and love for improvisation in her acoustic duo with violinist Petra Várallyay. Besides performing at various Hungarian, European and Asian stages; she teaches folk singing to kids in her hometown, to future folk musicians at the Liszt Academy where she holds the position of assistant lecturer, and to adults in Hungarian and international workshops.
