Matyi is a very versatile musician, composer, festival organiser and music manager, who is generally very active in the Hungarian and international folk and world music scene. His first instrument was the dulcimer, or ”cimbalom” in Hungarian, and he graduated as a classical dulcimer player at the Bartók Conservatory in Budapest. Since then he has learnt to play an impressively wide range of other instruments, including bagpipes, flutes, tambura and hurdy-gurdy, and is constantly learning to play new ones.
Being a very versatile musician who never stops searching for new sounds, instruments, musical opportunities and projects, he has played in rock, metal, hip-hop, historical, contemporary, Irish folk, reggae-ska and electro-ambient bands; he is one of the founding members of one of the country’s popular world music fusion bands, Góbé; as well as a Moldavian music band Pásztorhóra. He also works as an artist and composer in several theatres. Besides all that, he even finds the time to occasionally give classes or instrument workshops. Anything he does, he does it with unflagging enthusiasm and passion.
