As a child of a family of musicians, Joana Elena Obieta has been surrounded by music since her early childhood. She played the flute for many years, as well as the upright bass and the saxophone. When she was 11 years old, Joana Elena found her most transparent way of expression in her voice. The variety of cultures in Joana Elena’s heritage and her passion for exploring the diversity of cultures in the world has deeply influenced her understanding and love of music. Many travels to South America, Cuba and Europe have enriched her musical vocabulary.

Her music represents the diversity of cultures that have influenced her. She strongly believes, that music enhances a level of communication that gives it a fascinating power to cross national, linguistic and cultural borders. It creates understanding through sensual and emotional means. In her work, Joana Elena wants to be an intermediary and experiment with these different musical patterns to bring people closer together and question alleged barriers to seed a vehicle to change our present and future.
